Paige Abrams American Christian Academy, Tuscaloosa, AL. Class of 2018. Instrument: Flute, Director: Heather M. Henson. Paige Abrams is the recipient of the John Philip Sousa Award at American Christian Academy as a sophomore. This is only the fourth year for the award to be presented in our young program. Paige has been selected to the Alabama All-State Red Band so far in her freshman, sophomore, and junior years and was also an All-State member in middle school. Paige has served as the band librarian and flute section leader for four years.

Lizzie Amory Toms River High School North, Toms River, NJ. Class of 2016. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: George Powers. Lizzie is a four-year member of the Toms River North Marching Band, Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band. She is also a three-year member of the Jazz Band. And a member of the pit orchestra. She has one been chosen to perform in the All-Shore Symphonic Band, All-South Jersey Symphonic Band and New Jersey All-State Symphonic Band. She has twice been chosen to play in the All-South Jersey Wind Ensemble, first chair in her senior year.

Amanda Ballbach Muskego High School, Muskego, WI. Class of 2016. Instrument: Flute/Piccolo, Director: James Beckman and Matt Mueller. She embodies everything that makes a band student great. She is an incredible musician, leader and mentor. She sets the example through her preparation and high standards. Her section looks up to her, and she has mentored a number of our underclassmen. She has performed in solo ensemble every year since 8th grade, making it to state on two different instruments multiple times. In fact she has earned perfect scores at state multiple times. Her freshman year, she played with the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra. She performed with the University of Milwaukee Youth Wind Ensemble all 4 years of high school. She was also a member of the Milwaukee Music Festival Honors band the past 4 years. She is a three year member of Wind Ensemble and Pit Orchestra. She was a section leader for marching band and a Drum Major her senior year.

Holly Barnes served as drum major for the marching band and first chair within the saxophone section. She was selected to participate in the All-County band clinic as a saxophone instrumentalist and will be pursing a degree in music from Western Carolina University.

Alexandra Barrett Frankenmuth High School, Frankenmuth, MI. Class of 2016. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Eric Clauder. Alexandra is a four-year member of the Frankenmuth High School Marching Band and Wind Symphony. She also was marching band drum major for two years. She was a member of the Saginaw Bay Youth Orchestra for three years being principle clarinet for two of them. She also was an auditioned, three year member of the Eastern Michigan University Honors Band as principle clarinet. She was part of the Muth Community Players pit orchestra for four years. In her senior year of high school, she was nominated to the MSBOA Michigan Youth Arts Festival as an honors band member and also as a Concerto Soloist. She has a genuine love and talent for music and often gives back to the music program to help grow and improve the program.

Jacob demonstrated a strong enthusiasm for and commitment to the Junipero Serra High School Band Program during his tenure with the organization. He played both euphonium and tuba in the school's various wind bands and eventually spent a year marching with Gold Drum and Bugle Corps.

Gavin's outstanding achievement in instrumental music has made him a great asset to the Hinsdale Adventist Academy Bands. Mr. Bedney is awarded the John Philip Sousa Award in recognition of impeccable musicianship and years of service to the HAA Bands.

Julian Benali Kettle Run High School, Nokesville, VA. Class of 2016. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Matt Yonkey. Julian earned this award through hard work and dedication to musical excellence. He became something by focused efforts to achieve at the highest levels. He is most deserving of this award.

Camden Berka Sidney High School, Sidney, MT. Class of 2016. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Kilee Sundt. Camden Berka leads his clarinet section with great dignity. He is a reliable musician and has served as principle chair for multiple honor bands and performances. Camden is flexible when it comes to participating in band and has maintained a steady level of skill in playing the clarinet.

Theresa Bertels St. Marys Junior Senior High School, St. Marys, KS. Class of 2016. Instrument: Flute, Director: Kirsten Arpin. Theresa has been a fully dedicated student of the arts for the past 4 years. She has been a member of both district choir and district honorable mention band, and she has also received multiple 1 ratings at regional and state band, choir, and piano festivals. Theresa will be pursuing a degree in Music Education.

Rachel Billings Lebanon High School, Lebanon, NH. Class of 2016. Instrument: Bassoon, Director: Lauren Haley. Rachel Billings embodies all of the characteristics of this prestigious award. She has been accepted into the NH All-State Music Festival all four years of high school, scoring the highest in the state her junior year. She has participated in every ensemble in the program; the Pep Band, Jazz Band, Concert Band, and was even part of a chamber ensemble. She was elected as Band President her senior year and was an excellent leader. She is a very talented musician and it was a pleasure working with her. The Lebanon High School Band is proud to award Rachel Billings with the John Philip Sousa Band Award.

Jamie Bolting Yorktown High School, Yorktown, TX. Class of 2016. Instrument: Horn, Director: Nathan Jones. This student exemplifies the spirit of the John Philip Sousa award. He was the first drum major and region band participant the school has had in the last five years. Our program will always remember him as the student who helped change the trajectory of the band program in Yorktown, Texas for the better.

Joshua Caleb Bolton Joe T Robinson High School, Little Rock, AR. Class of 2016. Instrument: Baritone, Director: Charity Cox. Joshua has been a part of the Robinson bands since 6th grade. He plays the trumpet and the baritone. He has volunteered countless hours in the bands concessions stands and is always willing to lend a helping hand. He has been awarded the outstanding Senator award three years in a row and this year was also presented with the high school outstanding brass band student.

Katelyn Bond Richfield Springs Central School, Richfield Springs, NY. Class of 2016. Instrument: Flute/Drum Major, Director: Paul Blake. Katie won the Drum Major position as a freshman, and quickly had the respect of the marching unit. Very well rounded musician and student.

Carissa Borrego University Preparatory Academy, San Jose, CA. Class of 2016. Instrument: Tenor Sax, Director: Jemal Ramirez. Carissa was one of first band students at our school to take pride in being a band member and she became a great leader for our group. She was our drum major in our marching band, she played drums in the percussion section and tenor sax in concert band and jazz band. She continues to make music in college.

Michaella Braamse Grace Christian School, Watervliet, MI. Class of 2016. Instrument: French Horn/Percussion, Director: Robin McBride. Michaella started out as a percussionist, primarily on the mallets. She switched over to the French Horn her junior year and has become quite proficient. She is also a keyboard player and a leader of the school's worship team.

Robert Brown has shown leadership in the instrumental program as well as in the school by serving as president of several organization, community involvement and volunteer work. Brooke Burnett Ringwood High School, Ringwood, OK. Class of 2016. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Kyle Stewart. Brooke began playing trumpet in fifth grade, but quickly stepped up into the Ringwood High School Band a year later, under the direction of Jim Pearce. She received Superior ratings at the State and District levels multiple times and helped lead the band to State contest three years in a row. Brooke consistently volunteered her time playing for the community. She participated in numerous honor bands, including Red Carpet, All-Area, Tri-State, NOC, SWOSU Senior, and SWOSU Tuba Christmas. Brooke was held the position of first chair from sophomore year until her graduation.

Kensie Burnside Stapleton Public Schools, Stapleton, NE. Class of 2016. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Daniel Gibbs. Kensie has shown outstanding dedication and musical achievement throughout her academic career at Stapleton Public Schools. She pushes herself to be the absolute best in everything that she does.

Kyle Burrow Trinity Christian School, Texarkana, AR. Class of 2016. Instrument: Trombone, Director: Kaitlin Shaw. Kyle Burrow began playing trombone in the sixth grade. During his time at school he made All-Region Band twice and was selected for the Four States Bandmasters Association Honor Band his senior year. Kyle's dedication to excellence and his desire to help others will be missed, but we wish him luck college!

He enjoyed participating playing clarinet and other musical instruments within both the woodwind and brass section in his high school in ensembles such as Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Musical Pit Band, Show Choir, Chamber Choir and more. He also performed in the Tri-County Community Band (Wilton, IA) and has guest-conducted the Linn Street Band at the Iowa City Senior Center (Iowa City, IA).

Patricia is receiving this award for outstanding musicianship and dedication to band in Northwest New Mexico. Her positive attitude and leadership skills benefited not only Kirtland bands, but bands at San Juan College and honor bands in New Mexico and Colorado.

Sofia Carbonara Amherst Central High School, Amherst, NY. Class of 2016. Instrument: Percussion, Director: Craig Incontro. Sofia Carbonara will be attending the University of Michigan this fall as a percussion performance major. Sofia has been the principal percussionist of the Amherst HS Wind Ensemble the past four year as well as being the tympanist of the Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra. Sofia has been one of the hardest working and dedicated student musicians that I have ever taught. She has performed in every NYSSMA and ECMEA instrumental festival since 6th grade.

Nathan is now pursuing a degree in Music Education at East Tennessee State University.

Gabrielle Charles East Valley High School, Yakima, WA. Class of 2016. Instrument: Horn, Director: Kyle Langston. Gabby was born in Colorado and comes to us from Louisiana. She has played horn since 7th grade, after playing the trumpet for a year. She has been involved in many outside school activities such as pit orchestra and jazz band.

Faith Guzzo was an exceptional flutist who received first division ratings at District and State Solo & Ensemble. She studied privately for several years and had a strong and positive influence on not only her flute section but also on the entire band. Joelle was an alternate-participant for the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program in Music for French Horn in 2014.

Isaac is the total trumpet-meister, playing lead in Jazz Band One, first chair in our auditioned wind ensemble, and placing 2nd in the state solo contest. Sarah Jones came to us as a transfer student from Pennsylvania with a lot of ambition and desire to be the best. She progressed as a student over the years and became a member of the Texas All-State Symphonic Band, and was featured soloist in our very own UIL contest music. Although she is not a music major, she will have a bright future as a musician.

He has been the section leader in the Trumpet section all 4 years of High School. He was nominated and attended the Wyoming Ambassador of Music Tour in 2015. He marched in our State Marching Band after Rawlins High School had not participated in 7 years. Tyler had the only solo during this competition. Over his high school band career he has received the Clutch award, Lungs of Steel Award, the Most Valuable Player, was nominated for State Honor Band all four years and received a Varsity letter every year.

A New Jersey native, Miguel moved to Miami at 11 years and excelled in music early on in middle school. We were fortunate enough to have him move to our district boundaries for high school. Claudia Moreno Holy Cross Catholic Academy, Amarillo, TX. Class of 2017. Instrument: Tenor Sax, Director: Emily Grandmaison. Claudia is a truly versatile musician. She sings with the school choirs, played violin for a time, is in her second year as a tenor sax player. Her musicianship and diligence has won this junior this award. Her perseverance is uncanny as she creates and builds her skills. Having previous violin experience, learning the tenor sax was a challenge that she rose to. Recently, Claudia received a Superior rating at TAPPS State Solo contest for her rendition of Bach;s Bouree from the Third Cello Suite. This is Dan's first official year in the band program but started performing with us during his junior year. He deserves this recognition because of his determination and hard work. A native Vietnamese student, Dan came to the USA about 16 months ago. Barely speaking English, he started playing the clarinet in November of 2014. He competed with us at the State level for ensemble in April 2015. This year, Dan earned a Superior rating at the TAPPS State Solo contest for his rendition of Bach's Arioso. We at holy cross are very proud of his ethic to always strive for higher goals and work to achieve them in a respectable manner. He has also played with the school's handchime choir, sung in Mass as a Canter and recently won a Superior rating for the TAPPS State Art Contest.

Joffrey was involved in the band program for 8 years at Tri, from 5th grade through his senior year. He served as the clarinet section leader for 4 years, drum major for 2 years, and received multiple awards throughout his time in the program.

Gabriel Wise Brookville High School, Lynchburg, VA. Class of 2016. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Matthew Farley. Gabriel served as drum major, section leader, and Principal clarinet for the Brookville High School Band program. Gabriel also represented BHS in all district concert and symphonic bands in both Middle School and High School. Gabe's greatest service to the band was through his tireless work-ethic, caring attitude, and empathetic mindset. Our program has continued to grow because of how he approached his duty as a leader, and how he treated other students. Gabriel has continued his musical studies at Virginia Poly-Technical Institute where he is studying to be a band director.

Ellie Wright American Christian Academy, Tuscaloosa, AL. Class of 2016. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Heather M. Henson. Ellie Wright is the first recipient of the John Philip Sousa Award at American Christian Academy. Ellie was selected to the Alabama All-State Red Band in her freshman year, served as woodwind captain for four years, and served as drum major during her senior year. The instrumental music program began in 2008, and we began presenting this award this year. The class of 2015 will be our first class of senior band members.

Hannah Wyatt Beavercreek High School, Beavercreek, Ohio. Class of 2016. Instrument: Clarinet and Tenor Saxophone. Director: Matthew Frost. I (Hannah) participated in concert band, marching band, Jazz band, and several extra-curricular ensembles including clarinet choir, Muse Machine pit orchestra, and honor bands. I (Hannah) took on leadership roles, and I (she) served as an office aide my (her) senior year. I (Hannah) was a member of the BHS Symphonic band for one year, and Wind Symphony for three years, serving as principal clarinetist my (her) senior year. I (Hannah) will continue to make music a part of my (her) life during her time as a student at the University of Dayton, and I plan (she plans) to pursue a minor in music.

Megan Zierold Hillsborough High School, Hillsborough, NJ. Class of 2016. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Nicholas Clipperton. Megan is a member of Wind Ensemble, Clarinet Choir, Woodwind Quintet, and the Pit Orchestra. She is also one of the 3 Drum Majors for the Raider Marching Band. In addition, to her participation at Hillsborough High School, she is also a member of the Eastern Wind Symphony Youth Band and has participated in Region Band. In the Fall, Megan will be studying Biology & Music at Gettysburg College & the Sunderman Conservatory of Music.
