Paige Abrams American Christian Academy, Tuscaloosa, AL. Class of 2018. Instrument: Flute, Director: Heather M. Henson. Paige Abrams is the recipient of the John Philip Sousa Award at American Christian Academy as a sophomore. This is only the fourth year for the award to be presented in our young program. Paige has been selected to the Alabama All-State Red Band so far in her freshman, sophomore, and junior years and was also an All-State member in middle school. Paige has served as the band librarian and flute section leader for four years.

Zhappora, aka Z, is an exceptional student, passionate musician, and a great role-model to our school and Music Program. Z contributed hours of work into organizing our Second Annual Benefit Concert, which we raised over $2,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Center.

Maria Benitez is one of the most hard working students I have met in my 20 years of teaching. She started playing the saxophone when she was in the 8th grade. Each year she has made great strides with her overall performance level. She will be attending Georgetown University in the fall, majoring in Public Policy. She credits her success to her Band experience. It has taught her stay forcused while maintaining a well rounded life.

Kolton has been a leader of the Shelton Music Program for four years, participating in the award winning Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble and Concert Bands as well as South Puget Sound College Jazz Ensemble. Kolton was selected for the 2018 Pacific Lutheran University Northwest Honor Band and will be part of the University of Washington Husky Marching Band in the Fall of 2018.

Riley Davis Sequatchie County High School, Dunlap, TN. Class of 2018. Instrument: Euphonium, Director: Tim Willis. Riley transferred to Sequatchie County Middle School in the 8th grade and joined the Concert Band on alto saxophone. He joined the marching band in 9th grade playing tenor drums and switched to percussion in Concert Band. He continued to play saxophone in Jazz Band and quartet. He won the Drum Major position his senior year and was an excellent leader for the Marching Band. He also switched to euphonium and quickly became a proficient player. He received a scholarship to Tennessee Tech University in music education, and is now studying with Winston Morris and the TTU Tuba Ensemble.

Domonic DeMascola received this award in his senior year at monarch where he was the Vice President of the Tri-M honor society, one of two students to attend All-State from monarch high school, Drum Major of the marching band, and a part of the internationally acclaimed indoor percussion group STRYKE Percussion.

Cameren Diaz Brawley Union High School, Brawley, CA. Class of 2018. Instrument: Alto Saxophone, Director: Esteban Corona. Cameren Diaz played alto saxophone in the Brawley Union High School band. She became the group's drum major her senior year where she resiliently led the group. Cameren was also in the BUHS Chorus and Drama and was in they school's production of Little Shops of Horrors.

Jasmine Diaz St. Augustine High School, St. Augustine, FL. Class of 2018. Instrument: Percussion and French Horn, Director: Wes Peters. Jasmine served our band as our Band Captain this school year and was an in-valuable asset to the SAHS Band. He is involved in our jazz ensemble and in concert band where he showcases his amazing talent. To me, what stands out the most, is his dedication. I am his 5th band director in 6 years and for him to achieve the level of musicianship that he has, while continuing to sign up for our ensembles, truly shows how dedicated he is. His musicianship has been example for the younger students and his dedication has been an example for all of us. I cannot think of a more deserving student for this award.

Janae Glover, Clarinet, Sweet Home High School, Amherst NY, Class of 2018, Director: Cory Morrow. Janae was first chair clarinet in her high school band, made All-County elementary, middle and high school, and All State middle and high school. She was a member of the middle school Jazz Band, high school Pit Orchestra, and performed several solos with the Wind Ensemble. Janae continued her musical endeavors throughout college performing in the concert band.

Jonathan Glover, a flutist at Fayette Academy, participated in High School Band for 4 years, as well as Junior High and Beginning Band prior to that. Carlos Gonzalez Brazos High School, Wallis, TX. Class of 2018. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Cody Jamison. Carlos is an 8 year trumpet player from Brazos High School. He has served as section leader, drum major, and lead trumpet in the jazz band. Carlos has also participated in the ATSSB all-region band and jazz band during multiple years, as well as making it to State Solo and Ensemble. Carlos will be missed by the Brazos Band, and we wish him a bright future as he leaves to pursue a degree in music, and eventually become a band director.

Jonathan Jalbert High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Houston, TX. Class of 2018. Instrument: B-flat clarinet, Director: Stephen G. Crawford. While he is not going to major in music, Jonathan intends to continue to make music and improve on his instrument through college and beyond. His intended major is ‘Undecided’ because he likes learning about so many different things! Jonathan is HSPVA’s 2017-2018 Concerto Competition winner, was a 2018 YoungArts Honorable Mention Winner, and will be going on tour to Asia and representing the country this summer as a part of Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra of the USA. In his senior year, he sat primary chair and was trumpet section leader in his junior year. The first brass musician awarded this honor at Central Magnet, this accomplished musician scored consistently at the top of her section at Mid-State and All-State, while also performing in the Nashville Youth Orchestra, alongside the grammy-winning Nashville Symphony. Ana began her collegiate music studies at the University of Michigan, studying music performance and education.

He would ask that the music room stay open until 6 PM every evening so that he could stay to practice two hours a day after school! David shows all of the qualities of a bandleader and concert master. He is now using those skills to pursue a Bachelor's of Music in Percussion at Adams State University.

Sven Kuhne University Preparatory Academy, San Jose, CA. Class of 2018. Instrument: Tuba, Trombone and Euphonium, Director: Jemal Ramirez. Sven was a team player from day one in band. He started on the euphonium his beginning band year. I asked him to switch to trombone and he did so with pride. When I asked his band if anyone was interested in switching to Tuba—Sven did. He was a pillar in our low brass section 7th grade through 11th grade. Though he did not take band his 12th grade year he did play in a concert with us his senior year.

Otis was our most spirited team player for all four of his years in Drum Line. He started as a beginner his freshman year and grew into a fine leader, both musically and personally.

Kameron Mills Texas City High School, Texas City, Texas. Class of 2018. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Matthew Raines. Kameron Mills is an outstanding musician who devoted 8 years to the Texas City High School Band program. He consistently received First division awards for his solos and advanced to the State UIL competition as well. Kameron also received the honor of Region Band 3 out of 4 years of his High school career. He advanced to the Area round of auditions two years consecutively. He was a member of National Honor Society as well. Kameron was a fine musician in high school and very dedicated to his craft.

But Stephanie has persevered through the adversity to become a stalwart player. Tatum served as our assistant drum major and first chair tenor saxophonist. In addition, she also participated in numerous district and state events and received Superior ratings consistently. Her plans are to attend the University of West Alabama and march in the band. Tessa Peters Buckeye Trail Band, Lore City, OH. Class of 2018. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Douglas Hanna. Tessa has been the heart and soul of a rebuilding band program. She has participated in the All-Ohio State Fair Band, Muskingum Youthfest Honor Band, OMEA solo and ensemble, OMEA District IX Honor Band, and Capital University Honor Band. Tessa has also served as our drum major for the 2017/2018 school year.

Christian Peterson helped mold the Paradise Valley High School Band Program into what it is now, through their absolute dedication to musical excellence. She was able to study and express her passion for music through playing, directing, and creating music within our schools band program. Upon graduation Walker will continue his studies in music at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music where he has earned a full scholarship.

An exceptional leader and musician, Kai has served as Band ASB President this year and went to State Solo and Contest during each of the last three years. He has proven to be incredibly reliable, and students can always look up to him for leadership and musicality. When he is not practicing, Kai can often be found in the band room stacking chairs or putting away stands.

He was selected for state clinic, was featured in La Porcha Renee video " All ready Already", and also competed on our Indoor color guard unit. She joined the band program from the music dept and has influenced everyone around her. He has participated in traveling Christmas caroling, and guitar class. Logan also contributed to the band by building a new stand rack for the school during the 2017/2018 school year.

Jeremiah X. Zepeda Holy Cross Catholic Academy, Amarillo, TX. Class of 2019. Instrument: Percussion, Director: Emily J. Grandmaison. Jeremiah is this year's recipient. He earned the privilege by being responsible and representative of HCCA's Band in and outside of TX. He was named Assistant Drum Major during marching season, Section Leader for Percussion. Jeremiah earned a 1st Division for his snare solo at TAPPS State S & E as well as TPSMEA S &E. He's auditioned for 5-State Honor Band and helped his band take 4th at the ENMU's JazzFest 2018. Jeremiah excels on every percussion instrument especially the trap set for Jazz Band. This past year, he joined the Varsity Handbells playing bass clef notes with pride.
