Marcos Antunez Riverside Community Schools, Oakland, IA. Class of 2020. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Amanda Brandon. Marcos is a great asset to the Riverside music program. Marcos is involved in the marching, pep, jazz, and concert bands. He is punctual, polite, and works hard everyday to ensure success in our ensembles. Marcos is a member of the Youth Trumpet and Taps Corps, playing TAPS for local funerals and Memorial Day services.

Zhappora Arnic Merrill F. West High School, Tracy, CA. Class of 2018. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Jonathan Raman. Our Music Program students nominated Zhappora Arnic for the 2018 Sousa Award. Zhappora, aka Z, is an exceptional student, passionate musician, and a great role-model to our school and Music Program. Z contributed hours of work into organizing our Second Annual Benefit Concert, which we raised over $2,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Center.

Kal Bailey South Wasco County High School, Maupin, OR. Class of 2020. Instrument: Flute, Director: Micilin Kelly. Kal Bailey is a flutist and guitarist who helped to re-establish a music program through community events and leadership after a 6 year absence of a music program.

Skyler Baker Scurry-Rosser High School, Scurry, TX. Class of 2018. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: David Trewitt. Skyler Baker is a great student, and made TMEA All-State on the Soprano Clarinet (Bb). She made All-Region several times, and All-Area. She was also the Clarinet section leader for multiple years at our school.

Maggie Banks Lee Academy, Lee, ME. Class of 2018. Instrument: Trombone, Director: Rosalind Goodrich. Maggie has been an outstanding member of the Lee Academy Music Department all four years of high school. Her dedication is rivaled by none and pushes other students to find success.

Kathryn Belcher Rural Retreat High School, Rural Retreat, VA. Class of 2018. Instrument: Flute, Director: Thomas Hilliker. Katy was an outstanding member of the RRHS band. She was always willing to help out the band whenever it was needed. 

Maria Benitez Horizon Science Academy (HSA) McKinley Park, Chicago, IL. Class of 2018. Instrument: Saxophone, Director: Jamie Kovatch. Maria Benitez is one of the most hard working students I have met in my 20 years of teaching. She started playing the saxophone when she was in the 8th grade. Each year she has made great strides with her overall performance level. She will be attending Georgetown University in the fall, majoring in Public Policy. She credits her success to her Band experience. It has taught her stay forcused while maintaining a well rounded life.

Kolton has been a leader of the Shelton Music Program for four years, participating in the award winning Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble and Concert Bands as well as South Puget Sound College Jazz Ensemble. Kolton was selected for the 2018 Pacific Lutheran University Northwest Honor Band and will be part of the University of Washington Husky Marching Band in the Fall of 2018.

Jared Bowden Valdez High School, Valdez, AK. Class of 2018. Instrument: Percussion, piano, trumpet, Director: Ann Norris. Jared participated in Jazz and Concert Band for four years of high school, demonstrating outstanding dedication and musicianship. He is an avid student of music theory and enjoyed composing. In his final Band concert with Valdez High School, he conducted his own arrangement of "America the Beautiful" to the students' and audience's delight.

She was awarded Superior ratings at every Solo Competition and also provided outstanding student leadership. She doubled on Jazz Piano in the School's Zero-Hour Jazz Band. An entirely self-taught violinist, Cheryl adapted to our unique band setting, extinguishing limitations and demonstrating superior leadership. Cheryl has demonstrated, from day one, the skills that are required of a John Philip Sousa Award recipient.

Brian was involved in Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Musical Pit Orchestra, Jazz Band, Theory Class, and the summer City Band. She is an all around percussionist with a great attitude and willingness to do what is needed. She strives for the highest and never quits. She's going to be a very successful educator one day.

Caleb Cockerill Monclova Christian Academy, Monclova, OH. Class of 2018. Instrument: Tuba, Director: Michelle Keaster. Caleb Cockerill was selected to participate in the Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall in 2016. He has participated in solos and ensembles and received excellent ratings. He is a leader in the band program at Monclova Christian Academy.

Joshua Coffey Westerville South High School, Westerville, OH. Class of 2018. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: John Laswell. Josh is a trumpet player from Westerville, Ohio where he played trumpet in middle and high school. At Westerville South HS he played in the Wind Ensemble and Marching Band for four years, and Jazz Band for three. He served as a trumpet section leader and soloist.

Keira Colleluori Saugus High School, Santa Clarita, CA. Class of 2018. Instrument: Alto Saxophone, Mellophone, French Horn, Director: Jay Jarrett. Keira is one of the most exemplary students we have had in our program. She is a fine musician, and excellent student leader. Her senior year, she learned the French horn, because she knew we would be short of players. She is a wonderful student and well-deserving of this award.

Adam Coronado Rio Linda High School, Rio Linda, CA. Class of 2018. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Richard Smiley. Adam Coronado is a hard working student who served our band first as the principal clarinet in symphonic band and as our drum major. In addition to clarinet, he has also played tenor and baritone sax in the band and was a stand-out student in our piano class. Adam had the opportunity to participate in several regional honor bands. Adam is considering majoring in music education.

She received superior ratings at solo competition every year and also participated in many ensembles such as marching band. She will be attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Mya Sandy DeLong Ticonderoga High School, Ticonderoga, NY. Class of 2018. Instrument: Oboe, Director: Michael Iturrino. Mya Sandy DeLong is an American composer/arranger. While her primary instrument is oboe, Mya is a multi instrumentalist who also has performed on flute, trombone, piano and bass guitar. She has been principal oboe of the Zone 6 Area All State Concert Band 4 years in a row.

Karsen DeWeese Northern Heights High School, Allen, KS. Class of 2018. Instrument: Saxophone, Director: Amanda Merring. Karsen DeWeese is an excellent musician and student. She lead as Drum Major this past year and the students respect her. She will do great things and we will miss her. 

Jasmine Diaz St. Augustine High School, St. Augustine, FL. Class of 2018. Instrument: Percussion and French Horn, Director: Wes Peters. Jasmine served our band as our Band Captain this school year and was an in-valuable asset to the SAHS Band. She was in the Drum Line during Marching Season and was one of our French Horn players during Concert Season. Jasmine also participated in our Winter Guard Program this year.

Jonathan C. Diaz Hattiesburg High School, Hattiesburg, MS. Class of 2018. Instrument: Tuba/Sousaphone, Director: David Walker. Student is a benchmark of leadership and musical excellence. The student has been awarded a band scholarship to Jackson State University and Alabama State University. Mr. Diaz is exceptional in leading by example by being dedicated, never missing a performance.

Patrick Dickenson Windsor High Scool, Windsor, VT. Class of 2018. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: David R Keeney. Patrick is an outstanding musician and is extremely dedicated to our program. He is involved in our jazz ensemble and in concert band where he showcases his amazing talent. To me, what stands out the most, is his dedication. I am his 5th band director in 6 years and for him to achieve the level of musicianship that he has, while continuing to sign up for our ensembles, truly shows how dedicated he is. His musicianship has been example for the younger students and his dedication has been an example for all of us. I cannot think of a more deserving student for this award.

Joseph Dickman Skyline High School, Front Royal, VA. Class of 2018. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Daniel Holland. Joseph Dickman is a graduating senior at Skyline High School, who was a drum major for the Marching Hawks, trumpet and euphonium player for the Symphonic Band, and trumpet player for the Jazz Ensemble. Through these opportunities, he has shown superior leadership and music performance skills.

Rosalee Discenza Toms River High School North, Toms River, NJ. Class of 2018. Instrument: Flute, Director: George Powers. Rose is an outstanding musician who, besides being a member/soloist in Marching Band, Concert Band and Wind Ensemble, has been a three year member of the South Jersey Region III Symphonic Band

Michael Drummond Valley Christian High School, Chandler, AZ. Class of 2018. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Jennifer L. Freeman. Michael truly embodies the spirit of this award. He has demonstrated superior dedication over his high school career and a tenacity to reach a deeper understanding of how music is constructed and weave that into his playing and musical leadership.

MacKenzie Duey Bucklin R-II, Bucklin, MO. Class of 2019. Instrument: Trombone, Director: Adam Ueltschy. MacKenzie has, for years, been the only brass musician. She has had many challenging solos for marching as well as concert band. She has always risen to the occasion and has done the job of several musicians while always having a positive attitude and influence on the band.

He has participated in Marching Band, Concert Band and Jazz Band as well as held leadership roles within the band as section leader and drill caption. His accomplishments also include membership of ECODBA & OBU Honor Bands over the past 4 years. Jordan will be attending East Central University in Ada, OK this fall as a Music Major aspiring to be a Band Director.

Gabrielle Ellison Parish Episcopal School, Dallas, TX. Class of 2020. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Ruth Williams. Gabrielle Ellison is a student who exhibits all characteristics of an outstanding band student. She works incredibly hard, and is a true leader in the band program at Parish Episcopal School.

Melina Encinias Tucumcari High School, Tucumcari, NM. Class of 2018. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Paul Gibson. Melina has made New Mexico Allstate four years in a row and was first chair in 2018. She also has made district honor band the past five years, Southwest honor band in 2018, and she consistently achieves superior ratings at solo and ensemble. She has accomplished all of this without the opportunity to take private lessons.

Kenneth Fernandez has represented the Colonel Crawford Band Program positively throughout his time in the program. He has also received his Eagle Scout Rank, and the Louis Armstrong Award. He will be attending Ashland University, in Ashland, Ohio, and continuing to make music as a member of their marching band.

He has served as section leader, drum major, and lead trumpet in the jazz band. He started on saxophone and later switched to tuba but continued to play bari sax in the high school jazz ensemble. He studied privately on tuba and was later accepted as first chair tuba in the OMEA All-State Band. Bradley plans to study music education at The Ohio State University.

He started on the euphonium his beginning band year. I asked him to switch to trombone and he did so with pride. When I asked his band if anyone was interested in switching to Tuba—Sven did. He was a pillar in our low brass section 7th grade through 11th grade. Though he did not take band his 12th grade year he did play in a concert with us his senior year.

Joel Mark Opificius played Horn and Piano in the Instrumental Music Program at Capac Community Schools. Stephanie has endured a tumultuous high school band career, currently under the direction of the third band director in as many years. But Stephanie has persevered through the adversity to become a stalwart player. Stephanie has continuously proved her musical aptitude this year by being someone whom is reliable and knowledgeable, and no piece of music has been too challenging for her to overcome.

Tatum served as our assistant drum major and first chair tenor saxophonist. In addition, she also participated in numerous district and state events and received Superior ratings consistently. Warren has played saxophone for five years and has studied privately under Robert Haley, Sam Skelton, Christi Brogden, and Bill Van Dyke in addition to attending a wide variety of workshops and camps. In high school, he was a member of the concert band (principal), marching band (drum major), basketball drumline, saxophone trio, and jazz ensemble. He also enjoys serving thru music with his local church orchestra, as well as thru musical outreach within the community. He is a member of Tri-M, has participated in GMEA District 12 Honor Bands, and was a member of the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra Jazz Ensemble. He is a gifted and intelligent musician with an ebullient passion for the saxophone.

Mitchell is a 4 year band student with participation in marching, concert and jazz bands. He was low brass section leader for 2 years and has been a great role model for underclassmen. Already to his credit he has earned All-State Band four consecutive years, The Tennessee Governor's School for The Arts, Interlochen Center For The Arts' Summer Music Program for composition, and the Tanglewood Summer Music Camp. Upon graduation Walker will continue his studies in music at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music where he has earned a full scholarship.

Kai Sorem Steilacoom High School, Steilacoom, WA. Class of 2018. Instrument: Tenor saxophone, Director: Matt Vegh. An exceptional leader and musician, Kai has served as Band ASB President this year and went to State Solo and Contest during each of the last three years. He has proven to be incredibly reliable, and students can always look up to him for leadership and musicality. When he is not practicing, Kai can often be found in the band room stacking chairs or putting away stands.

Samuel Stout Streator Township High School, Streator, IL. Class of 2018. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Jamie Kotovsky. An extraordinary trumpet player, he will be attending Peabody for trumpet performance. His musicality, talent, and work ethic are unmatched and he is a great credit to our program and his community.

Paige Swanson Spencerville Adventist Academy, Spencerville, MD. Class of 2018. Instrument: French horn, Director: Marilyn Griffin. In addition to school band and orchestra ensembles, Paige plays French Horn with the New England Youth Ensemble, a world renowned ensemble based out of Washington Adventist University. She is a frequent guest artist for the SAA Honors choir and other local venues. She has played French horn for 8 years and plans to continue into college.

Blaine Swieder Greenbrier High School, Greenbrier, TN. Class of 2018. Instrument: Euphonium, Director: Brenden Ambrose. Blaine applies all of his musical talent and emotion every time that he plays the euphonium.

Sebastian Tapia Douglas MacArthur High School, San Antonio, TX. Class of 2018. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Evan S Berry. Sebastian embodies the values of hard work and dedication, evident in his tremendous growth as a senior musician and leader. He was never the most talented trumpet player, but certainly the hardest working, allowing him to successfully pass his audition to pursue a career in music education. His infectious positive demeanor helped others when they needed it in the most stressful of times.

Max R. Thierry Belle High School, Belle, MO. Class of 2018. Instrument: Alto Saxophone, Director: Michael J. Orf. Max has happily played all seven years with the Maries R-2 School District Band. He also played with the Gasconade Valley Conference, District, State Musical Festival, and Bi-State band programs and is looking forwarding to traveling with the Missouri Ambassadors of Music this summer playing in both the jazz and concert bands.

Edward Thompson South Pike High School, Magnolia, MS. Class of 2018. Instrument: French Horn, Director: Leonard K. McDonald. Edward Thompson is a great student, leader and mentor to the South Pike Band. He was selected for state clinic, was featured in La Porcha Renee video " All ready Already", and also competed on our Indoor color guard unit. He is an inspiration to his class and fellow band members.

Callie Thornton Claude High School, Claude, TX. Class of 2018. Instrument: Trombone, Director: Shelley Thornton. Callie has been the low brass section leader for two years and drum major for two years. She played trombone in a Brass Ensemble that competetd at the State UIL Solo/Ensemble contest in 2015 and 2018. As drum major she led the band to its second Area Marching Contest and helped guide the band to it's first ever Sweepstakes Award

Laura Villalobos La Puente High School, La Puente, CA. Class of 2018. Instrument: Alto Saxophone/ French Horn, Director: Robert Marshall. For the last two years, Laura has not only been our Drum Major but an outstanding musician. With out any hesitation, if there is something asked from her she is one of the first to volunteer.

Ms. Peyton Wakefield was presented this award for her outstanding musicianship, leadership, dedication, and all of her hard work. She will be missed in the Brock Band Program, but we wish her the very best.

She joined the band program from the music dept and has influenced everyone around her. She has stepped into a drum major role her senior year to lead the marching band in its first successful marching season.

Chandler White Holland High School, Holland, MI. Class of 2018. Instrument: Percussion, Director: Bethany VanOss. Chandler likes to spend most (if not all) his time around the marimba. He plans to pursue Music Education at Morehead State University under Dr. Brian Mason

Logan Wilmes North Andrew R-VI, Maryville, MO. Class of 2018. Instrument: Saxophone, Director: Stephen Till. Logan has been a devoted member of the Marching Cardinals and Concert Band for 6 years. He has participated in traveling Christmas caroling, and guitar class. Logan also contributed to the band by building a new stand rack for the school during the 2017/2018 school year.

Jacob Wilson Crandon High School Band, Crandon, WI. Class of 2018. Instrument: Trombone, Euphonium, Bassoon, Director: Bethany Puffer. Jacob is an outstanding band member who plays multiple instruments and composes a variety of quality music. He participated in all band performances (including an optional jazz band), volunteered for various community performances, and participated in district and state solo and ensemble festival.

Jacob Zanowic Woodbridge High School, Greenwood, DE. Class of 2018. Instrument: Alto Sax, Director: Danielle Jones. Jacob Zanowic has enlisted into the United States National Guard and intends to pursue a degree in music upon completion of boot camp

Jeremiah X. Zepeda Holy Cross Catholic Academy, Amarillo, TX. Class of 2019. Instrument: Percussion, Director: Emily J. Grandmaison. Jeremiah is this year's recipient. He earned the privilege by being responsible and representative of HCCA's Band in and outside of TX. He was named Assistant Drum Major during marching season, Section Leader for Percussion. Jeremiah earned a 1st Division for his snare solo at TAPPS State S & E as well as TPSMEA S &E. He's auditioned for 5-State Honor Band and helped his band take 4th at the ENMU's JazzFest 2018. Jeremiah excels on every percussion instrument especially the trap set for Jazz Band. This past year, he joined the Varsity Handbells playing bass clef notes with pride.
