Zachary Achterhoff-Failing Hesperia High School, Hesperia, MI. Class of 2022. Instrument: Percussion, Director: Stephanie Purvis. Zach was percussion section leader for 3 years, earned a position in the Michigan All-State Band and was the WZZM musician of the week his senior year. He started an extra-curricular drumline program in our school to play at sporting events and included students from other sections on various percussion instruments to make a full drumline.

Nathan Adams Manhattan Christian School, Manhattan, MT. Class of 2023. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Daniel Chausse. As only a Junior, Nathan continues to improve and impress with his skill and dedication to the trumpet. He received a superior rating for his trumpet solo this year, and will compete at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in San Antonio in June.

Kaden Adamson Somerset Academy Charter High, Homestead, FL. Class of 2022. Instrument: French Horn, Mellophone, Trumpet, Guitar, Director: Juan Turros. Multi-instrumentalist Kaden Adamson has been a fixture in our school's band, The Stallion Battalion, since his middle school years. A devoted musician, he has recently added the trumpet and guitar to his musical arsenal. He is also an accomplished soloist, both in the classical and jazz idioms. Alison Agena Archbishop Hannan High School, Covington, LA. Class of 2022. Instrument: Clarinet/Oboe, Director: Matthew Soukup. Alison served as Librarian, Woodwind Section Leader, and Drum Major for the 2021-2022 School Year. She will be studying Music at Louisiana State University.

Daniel Akers Seymour, Seymour, MO. Class of 2022. Instrument: Percussion, Director: Caroline Collins. Daniel is a prime example of what a Seymour Band student should be like. This student has consistently demonstrated maturity beyond their years, exemplary musicianship, and overall character. He will be joining the Marines.

William Earle Akridge Cherokee Bluff High School, Flowery Branch, GA. Class of 2022. Instrument: Saxophone, Director: J. Craig Cantrell. Will Akridge is one of the founding members of the Cherokee Bluff High School Band Program. During his time, he saw the band growth in strength and numbers while performing in every ensemble offered by the program. He served as the band's woodwinds captain before becoming the band president his senior year. He is a very highly self-motivated student, as he works with very little assistance or further direction. He is confident about his decisions concerning his performance and is very proficient in excelling in the music rehearsal through his exceptional leadership skills.

Michael Albert Miami Senior High School, Miami, FL. Class of 2023. Instrument: Alto Saxophone, Director: Santiago Hernandez. Michael has demonstrated all the qualities of the model band student, and makes everyone around him better. He is a highly motivated individual who strives for the highest, and is always open to learning new things. As a performer, he is remarkably consistent and exciting, and I know he can take any challenge he sets his mind to.

Deven Tre'von Bailey Clinton High School, Clinton, SC. Class of 2022. Instrument: Saxophone, Director: Kolman McMurphy. Deven is a fantastic musician and leader in the Clinton Band Program. He is a composer, arranger, soloist, and improviser, who leads the band by example in concert, marching, and jazz bands. Deven plans to study jazz and music composition at the university level.

Ava Baker Beech High School, Hendersonville, TN. Class of 2022. Instrument: Flute, Director: John Hylton and Jacob Alegria. Ava Baker served as section leader in Concert Band/Marching Band and multiple SUPERIOR ratings at Solo and Ensemble. While being an active member of almost every ensemble offered, she was also selected to college Honor Bands from Tennessee Tech and University of Tennessee-Martin. . She also kept our Uniform Inventory at the ready! Ava's dedication, hard work and ability to work with all her peers make her a wonderful addition to the Sousa winner's roster.

Cole Baker Barr-Reeve MIddle High School, Montgomery, IN. Class of 2022. Instrument: Trombone , Director: Stephanie Obrian. Cole has been an outstanding student throughout his years in bnad. He took solos and ensembles to Indiana State Music Association District and State Solo and Ensemble Contest each yeat receiving the msjority of Gold medals. He was chosen for the IBA Redgion Honor band, IBA All District Honor bnad Drum Corp International INPact Band every year that he could participate. He plans to play in one of the Purdue Concert Band

Dustin Baker Northern Garrett High School, Accident, MD. Class of 2023. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Elizabeth Green. Dustin has displayed exemplary dedication and determination in his musical achievement and as a leader in our concert and marching bands. Dustin is also working on his Eagle Scout project to outfit the marching band and choir with sound systems. He inspires his peers to go above and beyond in their efforts towards musical excellence.

Shantell Balderas Lazaro Santa Maria High School, Santa Maria, CA. Class of 2022. Instrument: Tenor Saxophone, Director: Samantha Bunten. Shantell not only succeed as a musician, but as a leader through the band by assisting with the restructuring and organization of the entire music library over the course of three years serving as librarian for the band program. She was a role model to many band members, demonstrating the achievements that could be made and accomplished with the right mindset.

Kenneth Bandian El Camino High School, South San Francisco, CA. Class of 2022. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Ray Galela. Kenneth served as principal trumpet in symphonic band and solo chair in jazz band. As a member of jazz band Kenneth received acknowledgement for his outstanding solos and jazz arrangements at area jazz competitions his freshman and senior year, (so. and junior year were the COVID years.). As band council member and Band President Kenneth was a leader in class rehearsals, performances and events and was instrumental to the bands success.

Merilee Behrendsen Willard High School, Willard, OH. Class of 2022. Instrument: Flute, Director: Christian Watson. Merilee Behrendsen graduated from Willard High School in 2022. During her time with the band, she served as Field Commander and Flute Section Leader. She received multiple Superior ratings at OMEA Solo & Ensemble Adjudicated Event, and helped propel the Willard Flashes Band to their first Superior Rating at OMEA State District Large Group Adjudicated Event.

Sydney Bell Rich Hill R-4 School District, Rich Hill, MO. Class of 2022. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Miss Katie Klinksick. Sydney Bell was an incredibly dedicated and talented student and represented the Rich Hill Band Program very well. Sydney was first chair clarinet in the WEMO All-Conference Band and was a member of the 2022 All District Honorable Mention Band. She is currently studying to be a physicians assistant at the University of Missouri.

Samuel Bennett Syracuse High School, Syracuse, NE. Class of 2023. Instrument: trombone, Director: Brandy Hall. She has been a leader while participating in jazz band, concert band, and marching band. An outstanding musician who is very worthy of this award.

Mallory Blevins Ledford Senior High School, Thomasville, NC. Class of 2022. Instrument: Flute, Director: Angel M Gonzalez III. Mallory made an impression on our program from the moment she got to high school. Her passion for the program led her to principal chairs in our top ensembles, All- County and All-District honor band placements and All-State eligibility. Mallory also served as drum major her senior year.

Adam Van Boerum Fountain Valley High School, Fountain Valley, CA. Class of 2022. Instrument: Bassoon, Director: Maxwell Lowe. Adam Van Boerum is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and performer. He served as woodwind captain for the Fountain Valley Royal Regiment. He will be pursuing a Music Education major and will be attending Orange Coast College in the fall of 2022. Prior to that, he will be performing as a percussionist with the Gold Drum and Bugle Corps of San Diego, California.

He started playing the drums in 5th grade at Southeastern Elementary. He not only helps with the band, but also helps run sound and tech for the school musicals. He has a great work ethic and is always willing to help Mr. Cooley with any project.

Colin was awarded the JPS award for 2022 in recognition of his outstanding musical work ethic, and advanced dedication to his individual musical growth, and growth of any program his is affiliated with or within.

Cheyanne Bullard Southern Lee High School, Sanford, NC. Class of 2022. Instrument: Flute, Director: Angela D. Matthews. Cheyanne is an outstanding flautist and has a reputation for being kind and dependable. Cheyanne often labors unnoticed in order to make the band stronger. Cheyanne exemplifies the devotion and attitude a band student should have, and that is why she is the 2022 Sousa Award winner.

Morgan Bumgardner Dayton High School, Dayton, NV. Class of 2023. Instrument: Euphonium, Director: Joshua Strickland. Morgan is a 3-year member of the Dayton High School Dust Devil Band. Morgan has shown through his commitment and dedication to the band program that he is more than deserving of this award. He consistently puts forth his best effort in not just his music, but in his every day life. He is a vital and important part of this musical ensemble.

Camden Bunker Bemidji High School, Bemidji, MN. Class of 2022. Instrument: Baritone Saxophone, Director: Derek Wickum. Camden is an outstanding band student involved in all aspects of the high school band program. Camden is an All-State representative of Bemidji High School in the jazz program. He is also section leader for the saxophones, pit orchestra member, orchestra member, marching band member, Drum Major and part of the student leadership team.

She has been a 4 year member of our district honor band and has made Honorable Mention in the MO all-state band.

RaineyAnne Burroughs Bradford Preparatory School, Charlotte, NC. Class of 2022. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Justin Austenfeld. RaineyAnne has been a huge advocate for the growth of the band program here at our school. Her dedication to our ensemble’s growth, her representation of our school at events outside our school, and her investment in starting our pep band have made her an essential member of our ensemble.

Jahleel was a 6 year member of the marching band and percussion captain for 3 years, made region band twice and auditioned for South Carolina All-State band. He was awarded a substantial scholarship to Newberry college.

He is interested in music education, conducting, and performance. John was a member of All-District and All-Virginia Band during his time at Maggie Walker.

Isaac Campbell Yokota High School, APO, AP. Class of 2022. Instrument: Percussion, Director: Jenny Gaume. Isaac Campbell is a DODEA student who studied music in and out of school. He lead the high school rock band, serviced all of the school percussion instruments and took the initiative to help start a marching band. After graduation Isaac moved with his family to Germany.

His preference has always been to work behind the scenes (with the exception of his performances), but his main priority was to those above himself. Lane would always make sure the performances and presentations of the Fighting Bulldog Band were always left unmatched.

Andrew Caro Keys Gate Charter High School, Homestead, FL. Class of 2022. Instrument: Trumpet and Trombone, Director: Joy Harden. Andrew is a gifted musician on many instruments, and his future potential is recognized by many among our music staff and students. He is a strong, yet kind leader and teacher who would be able to inspire others with his passion and talent. He has a good head for theory, and a great heart for ensemble performance. At this time he plans to pursue music education as a career, and I'm excited to share the universal baton with him.

Laura Carpenter Archbishop Carroll High School, Radnor, PA. Class of 2022. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Jeffrey M. Darrohn. Laura is an excellent musician performing on clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone and soprano saxophone. She was excellent as the first chair clarinetist and concert master. She was also an excellent woodwind doubler in jazz band and the pit orchestras.

Jonathan Carribean Tapestry Public Charter School, Doraville, GA. Class of 2022. Instrument: Guitar, Piano, Voice, Director: Matthew Miller. Jonathan is a dedicated music student at Tapestry Public Charter School. He is an accomplished musician and a student leader who has performed at many events at school and in the community. Through his leadership and example, Jonathan has added immeasurably to the music department at Tapestry Public Charter School.

Luke was very involved in the North Daviess Music Department during his 4 years of High School. During his time in band, he starting out marching bass drum and then moved up to snare drum which he held that spot for both his Junior and Senior years. Luke was also an accomplished drum set player playing in Pep Band, Jazz Band, and Solo & Ensemble competitions through the Indiana State School Music Association. Luke was also actively involved in the school Choir and Drama programs.

Christian Deem Parkersburg H. S. Big Red Band, Parkersburg, WV. Class of 2022. Instrument: Tuba, Trombone, Euphonium, Director: Daniel B. White. Christian made WV All State Band 10, 11 and his 12 grade years. He has taken private lesson from Rocky and Sheila Wiseman on Tuba, Bass Trombone and Euphonium. He has attended at least three honor band a year since his 9th grade year in High School. He will be going to OU in Athens, Ohio for music education.

Abigail is an All-State French Horn player who is also a very good guitar player for the Howlin' Dog Jazz Band. She Served the McGregor Bulldog Pride band as Head Drum Major for the 2021-2022 year as a senior. She will be attending Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi in the fall and majoring in Music Industry.

Erik De La Cruz is not only an outstanding percussionist and leader for the Catoosa Bands - he also excelled academically during his time at Catoosa Public Schools. He was Valedictorian of the Class of 2022, recipient of The Gates Scholarship, and has been named a CEAT Scholar at the Oklahoma State University College of Engineering and Architecture. Erik also served on Student Council during his time at Catoosa.

Kendall has been an exceptional performer and leader in his years at St. Stanislaus. In addition to serving as battery captain, he picked up bass and piano and been as a key member of the SSC jazz band. Kendall plans to continue making music at the University of Southern Mississippi as he begins his undergrad.

Nathalia Diaz-Perez Avant Garde Academy of Broward, Hollywood, FL. Class of 2022. Instrument: Alto-Saxophone, Director: Marcos Rodriguez. Nathalia was one of the founding members of our program. After making numerous honors festival, she also continued with chorus. For the past 7 years, she has been a member of our top band, was Section Leader, Choir Co-Captain. She would eventually become Band Captain, our Student Conductor, and would direct the After School Women's Choir. She was also a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and various organizations with the school. She always lead and inspired while in high school and always ensured accountability amongst her peers as she always lead by example as a musician and as a leader.

He has played nearly all percussion instruments in our band during his 6th - 12th grade band career. Gabriel has worked very hard and performed in many ensembles including Band, Jazz Band, Choir and Mens Choir. In her 4 years at MHS she participated in the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, Sax Quartet, Pit Orchestra and Marching Band. She is the principal flute player for our concert band. Hayden has advanced greatly in her musical journey, even after a year out of band during which time we could not meet. Even though 2020 was a difficult year and band was not in session, she still proved to be a committed musician and showed tremendous advancement in her abilities this year.

John Morris Holy Family High School, Broomfield, CO. Class of 2022. Instrument: Trombone, Director: Laura Wiarda. This student showed a large amount of improvement after joining as a sophomore and having no previous instrumental experience. He then preceeded to become a drum major his senior year, and become one of the most outstanding students in the band. His constant devotion to the band lead the other students in band to seek improvement and allowed the band as whole to greatly improve.

Kacia Marie Moses Ticonderoga Junior/Senior High School, Ticonderoga, NY. Class of 2022. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Michael Iturrino. Kacia has performed with the Zone 6 Area All State concert band, the ECSMA concert band. She has performed on this stage with the ‘lil Big Band on tenor and bari saxophone and has, as of this year, picked up guitar and started performing on that. She currently is frontwoman of a local band “Ginger and the squids”, and plans on continuing her musical efforts beyond high school. This fall, she will be attending SUNY Potsdam studding creative writing.

Leandro is our Low Woodwind Section Leader and an accomplished Tenor Saxophone player. He is a member of our Marching, Concert and Jazz Bands, as well at the Tri-M Music Honor Society. This student suffers from a form of hearing impairment that has not once gotten in the way of her fine musicianship and leadership. Eleanor Stoutz Steubenville Catholic Central High School, Steubenville, OH. Class of 2022. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Sam Johnston. Eleanor Stoutz (Class of '22) from Steubenville Catholic Central High School is an extremely talented individual. Eloquent, driven, excellent marching ability, superior leadership skills and able to work with small or large groups effectively. She personally was responsible for teaching clarinet to and recruiting two people into the band program, enriching their lives and building the band program. As an upper classman, served as President of the Band and an extremely capable assistant to me, the band director. Besides music, she is talented in multiple performance - related arts. Her gentle attitude and musicianship has affected the band and personnel in many positive ways.

Bernice has been a huge part of the success of the band program at Hillside High School. She came in as a freshmen, eager to learn and she understood that practice, dedidation, and discipline would have to be consistent to be where she has arrived to today. She is one of the most well rounded leaders I have had the opportunity to mentor, as she plays multiple instruments, arranges music, and studies several genres. Since she entered the band program, she has been a consummate musician and leader for the group. She plans to join the music education profession in the middle school field.

An excellent musician and leader, she has been a pinnacle of what band members should strive to be. As senior drum major always did her best to help whoever needed it, and never gave less than her best at all times.

Jennifer is an accomplished and dedicated musician who has been a wonderful asset to our program. Jennifer served these past two years as our drum major and has served our organization so well in many different rolls. Hers will be hard shoes to fill.

Kiersten Velasquez Horizon High School, Scottsdale, AZ. Class of 2022. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Kyle Hollerbach. I have depended on Kiersten to help with the band so much and she has dedicated an incredible amount of her time and energy to our group. Over four years Kiersten has been a section leader, made honor band, sat first chair, held positions as secretary and president of band council and for the past two years has been Drum Major. Kiersten was a key leader through COVID and helped create the success our group has today. She has done all of this and continued to be an amazing student inside and outside of the classroom. Kiersten shows determination and drive in whatever she does and is a true leader. She never complained, even when I would push her. She has never run from any challenge that I have put in front of her and she always kept a high standard. Kiersten has shown superior leadership qualities, was always dependable, and extremely loyal.

Elizabeth White Janesville - Waldorf - Pemberton School, Janesville, MN. Class of 2022. Instrument: Clarinet, Director: Adam Hille. Elizabeth White has been a model band student over her four years at JWP. She has always been willing to lend a helping hand both. Elizabeth has played principle clarinet in the JWP wind ensemble for the past 3 years. During that time she has been able to mentor younger clarinet players, additionally Elizabeth served as a teachers assistant to the beginning band program.

Wyatt Randall White North Greene High School, Baileyton, TN. Class of 2022. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Brandon Woods. North Greene High School is one of four county high schools that educate the youth of Greene County. The school is nestled between farms that yield both produce and livestock. Much of the inhabited area is valleys surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains.

Jacob Williams Northpoint Christian School, Southaven, MS. Class of 2022. Instrument: Percussion, Director: Bryce Dickerson. Jacob served as the percussion captain for his Junior and Senior year with the Pride of the Point Ensemble. He was a member of the Mississippi All State Lions Band, and served in the inaugural season of the Indoor Percussion line, receiving a bronze medal in the State Championships.

Kayley Williams Honaker High school, Honaker, VA. Class of 2022. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Chandler Bartz. Kayley is a dedicated and hard working young musician. She is an accomplished trumpet player and leader. Kayley is above all one who cares about here fellow students and always works to see that everyone is treated fairly and feels cared for and loved.

Lee Wilson Thomas A. Edison High School, Alexandria, VA. Class of 2022. Instrument: Saxophone, Director: Charlie Mitchell. Lee has been in the Thomas A. Edison band program for 4 years playing in the Marching Band, Advanced band, and Jazz Band. This past year and during the pandemic, Lee acted as a drum major and leader to the band in both marching and concert bands.

Laney Wohlschlaeger Bayless High School, Saint Louis, MO. Class of 2022. Instrument: Trombone, Director: Stephen Elford. Laney graduated Magna Cum Laude, was a Faculty Choice Award winner and Power of 30 member, recipient of the Bayless Music Boosters Instrumental Scholarship, Mary Adkins Halbrook Scholarship, Truman State University President's Honorary Scholarship, Eugene and Alta Fair Foundation Scholarship, TruMerit Scholarship, President's Education Award, Southside Optimist Club Award, and Missouri A+ Scholarship. Laney was also the Drum Major of the 2021 Bayless Marching Bronchos.

Jadyn Woodard Addison High School, Addison, AL. Class of 2022. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Garrett McCurley. Jadyn Woodard displayed superior musicianship throughout her years at Addison. Her contributions to the band, along with her musicianship and leadership capabilities, have risen beyond the program's expectations.

Anthony Wyant Bella Vista High School, Fair Oaks, CA. Class of 2022. Instrument: Trombone, Director: Mr. Ed Moore. Played Trombone, Euphonium, Marching Band Baritone and Vibraphone (WP). Preformed in Jazz Band, Marching Band, Concert Band and Winter Percussion (WP) through his years of performing. Will take talents to California State University of Sacramento, and plans to participate in Marching Band while studying Mechanical Engineering, and, eventually, Aeronautical Engineering.

Katherine Wylie Westmoreland High School, Westmoreland, TN. Class of 2022. Instrument: Flute, Director: Jennifer Peterson. Katherine Wylie has been active in every band program offered since the sixth grade. She is very strong in multiple instruments although her first and true love is Flute and Piccolo. Katherine has represented our school in many of the highest levels of honor bands in multiple states. She will be studying music post-secondary. Katherine has been a leader, a mentor and a strong citizen of our program and the school as a whole. Her passion for music shows in everything she performs.

Miya Xavier Argonaut High School, Jackson, CA. Class of 2022. Instrument: Percussion, Director: Naor Karkay Selea. Miya Xavier has been a long-time band student that has been wholly dedicated to music. Her desire for improvement and pursuit of a wonderful product is what allows her to be a stellar leader of this band. I am thankful to have had her in my bands for the past 4 years.

Trevor is a 6-time member of the all-region band, a member of the honor band at the USC band clinic, a three-year member of our marching leadership team, and an outstanding young man. He will major in music education at the University of South Carolina. I’m forever proud of him.

Javin Zipkin Carlmont High School, Belmont, CA. Class of 2022. Instrument: Trumpet, Director: Brian Switzer. Javin Zipkin was accepted into the Carlmont Symphonic Band as a freshman. He played principal trumpet during his junior and senior years. In addition to being a fine trumpet player, Javin is a gifted composer and composed several original works chamber groups and symphony orchestra.
